Tian Earns First Pac-12 Player of the Week Honor

SAN FRANCISCO – Fangran Tian of the UCLA women’s tennis team was voted Pac-12 Player of the Week for April 10-16, the conference announced Tuesday.

Tian added another chapter to her already remarkable debut season, defeating No. 11 Janice Tjen 7-6(1), 6-7(6), 6-3 to secure a 4-3 win for the Bruins against fifth-ranked Pepperdine at Los Angeles Tennis Center on April 12. The non-conference match took over four hours to complete.

Two days later, Tian bested Sophie Luescher 6-4, 6-1 — again in clinching fashion — as UCLA returned to Pac-12 play with a 4-0 victory at Oregon. Tian also collaborated with fellow freshman Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer on two doubles wins for an unblemished week.

Tian has won the first 14 dual-match singles decisions of her career and is riding a seven-match doubles winning streak. The Bruins have prevailed in five of their past six contests.

The Pac-12 Player of the Week award represents the first of Tian’s career and third for UCLA women’s tennis this season. Kimmi Hance was previously honored for the week of March 13-19 and Sasha Vagramov for March 6-12. The program has now collected 39 all-time weekly accolades from the conference.
