CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Maryland women’s tennis team (4-1) won the consolation match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend 4-2 over Utah (3-2) on Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Terps won the doubles point with victories on courts 2 and 3. Minorka Miranda/Marta Perez Mur won first, 6-2 over Horwood/Townsend. Jojo Bach and Hannah McColgan finished second with a 6-3 victory over Hersh/Lopez.
In the singles, Selma Cadar and Minorka Miranda both had straight set wins on the first and second court. On courts 5 and 6, Francesca Feodorov and Hannah McColgan both lost in straight sets. In a tie-breaking second set, Kallista Liu secured the win for the Terps with a 6-2, 7(7)-6(5) victory over Anastasi Goncharova.
“Great team win for us today,” said head coach Katie Dougherty. “We did a good job at 2 and 3 doubles of grabbing the momentum and not letting up. The team was able to take the lessons we learned from playing an excellent UNC team yesterday and implement them today. We battled incredibly hard and managed well a long day of uncertainty of exactly when we would play this evening. Really happy for team beating a good Utah team.”
