Tennis Takes on Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament


IOWA CITY, Iowa – Rutgers tennis enters the postseason as the No. 14 seed in the Big Ten Tournament with a first round matchup against No. 11 seed Purdue on Wed., April 27 at 11 a.m. ET (10 a.m. CT) at Iowa’s Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex. The winner advances to face No. 6 seeded Nebraska on Thurs., April 28 at 1 p.m. ET (12 p.m. CT).

The Scarlet Knights compete in their second Big Ten Tournament since joining the conference for the 2015 season. Earlier this season on April 15 against the Boilermakers at the East Brunswick Racquet Club, Minchae Kim and Sydney Kaplan started the day with a strong 6-2 victory at second doubles, followed by duo Tess Fisher and Alisa Prinyarux finishing a 6-4 victory to claim the doubles point. Purdue answered with four consecutive wins in singles to clinch the match.

 

Sophomore Daira Cardenas leads the team with nine singles wins, including two wins over her final three singles matches of the regular season. Freshman Jackeline Lopez has been competing primarily in the No. 2 singles spot during her rookie season, and carries eight singles victories into the Big Ten Tournament. Freshman Minchae Kim earned her seventh singles win of her rookie campaign on April 19, topping her Indiana opponent in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles, Kim paces the squad with nine victories, including three consecutive Big Ten wins over Iowa, Purdue, and Indiana playing with Tess Fisher against Iowa and Sydney Kaplan against Purdue and Indiana. Fisher owns eight doubles triumphs this season, all at the No. 1 position.
