Tennis Rolls Past Delaware – Rutgers University Athletics

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Mai Nguyen, Minchae Kim, and Naomi Karki all earned wins in both singles and doubles play, as the Rutgers women’s tennis team (3-1, 0-0 B1G) rolled past Delaware (1-2), 6-1, on Friday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club.
 
“We came out incredibly offensive in doubles, which was key,” said head coach Hilary Ritchie. “We were able to continue that momentum going into the first sets of singles. I was impressed by the fight of the players, even after the match was clinched. I think this puts us in a great position going into tomorrow against Yale.”
 
Doubles
 
RU started off with a quick victory on doubles court No. 3, with Arina Valitova and Karki cruising to a 6-1 victory over the Blue Hens.

Courts No. 1 and 2 were both close battles, but Nguyen and Kim were able to prevail, 6-3, and clinch the doubles point for RU.

 

Tara Chilton and Yana Gurevich held a tight, 5-4, edge over Delaware when doubles play concluded.

 

Singles

 

Karki recorded the first singles victory of the afternoon, defeating the Blue Hens’ Alex Staiculescu in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to give Rutgers a 2-0 edge early in the round.

 

Chilton then followed the freshman’s victory up with her own straight-sets win, 6-2, 6-4, over Delaware’s No. 1 singles, Eliza Askarova.
