STARKVILLE, Miss. – University of Missouri tennis fell 4-1 to Mississippi State University in the final match of the regular season on Sunday, April 14 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. The Tigers move their season record to 5-21 to wrap up the 2024 season and 0-13 against SEC opponents.
Opening the match with doubles play against the Bulldogs, the Tigers claimed an early 6-1 win on court one with the duo of senior Mae Canete and junior Inah Canete. After falling to the Bulldogs 6-1 on court two, Mizzou faced off in a head-to-head contest in the No. 3 spot, boosting the match to a tiebreak. Graduate student Emelie Schwarte and sophomore Andrea Artimedi could not hold on and narrowly fell 7-6 on court three.
Walking into singles play down 1-0, the Tigers continued closely competing with Mississippi State, winning five of the six first sets. M. Canete secured a singles win for the Tigers in the No. 1 spot after winning the tiebreak in the first set, securing the point for Mizzou (7-6, 6-2). Senior Romary Cardenas Rifka and Artimedi fell short on courts five and six, respectively, after pushing their matches into three sets of competition.
HEAD COACH BIANCA TURATI
“This loss is a hard one to digest… We lost the doubles decisive point 7-6. We reacted well by winning five of the six first sets in singles, but we could not close out those matches. The girls fought hard, but it was not enough. We have to do a better job sticking to the game plan and executing when the clutch moments of the matches come. We are heading to Athens now. We will have the day off tomorrow and practice on Tuesday to prepare and give it all we’ve got in the SEC tournament.”
