KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A pair of members hailing from the Tennessee women’s tennis team will compete in the upcoming NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, as announced Tuesday evening. Sofia Cabezas was selected to compete in the singles bracket, while the pair of Cabezas and Elza Tomase were elected to the doubles championships.
Cabezas, a senior, currently ranked No. 13 in the country garnered an at-large selection seed in the singles tournament. The Valencia, Venezuela, native was tabbed a First Team All-SEC selectee and has notched 10 wins while competing at UT’s No. 1 singles spot and collected 12 wins atop the doubles lineup. Throughout this season, Cabezas has defeated six ranked singles opponents. Her singles success includes victories over three top-10 opponents.
Cabezas continues the three-year mark of a Lady Volunteer being elected to participate in the NCAA singles tournament.
In doubles, Cabezas and Elza Tomase were etched as an at-large selection. The pair is ranked No. 9 nationally and sport a 12-4 overall record. Together, they have dominated four ranked opponents together this spring, including a win against two duos ranked at the No. 9 spot. Tomase, an All-SEC Second Team nominee, has been a constant on the All-SEC teams, making it on the charts in each of the last three seasons. She is the 10th player in program history to be recognized three times on the All-SEC Teams, having earned first-team honors in 2023 and second-team acclaim in 2022.
This is the 24th time in program history Tennessee will have a doubles team compete at the NCAA Doubles Championships, including the first pair to get the nod since 2022.
The 64-player singles tournament is set for May 20-25 at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma, while the 32-pair doubles tournament will be held May 21-25 at the same location.
