Tech ousted by No. 6 seed Wake Forest


Box Score Cary, N.C. – Virginia Tech (9-16, 3-10) fell to No. 20 Wake Forest, 4-1, on Thursday night at the ACC Championships.

The Hokies looked strong to start doubles play going ahead on courts one and two. The No. 24 pairing in the country, Jordan Chrysostom and Ryan Fishback, took care of business to put Tech in position to take the doubles point. Alvaro Saez-Royuela Ariza and Scott Sculley put forth a strong effort going ahead early but came up just short, conceding the doubles point to Wake Forest.

In singles, Hugo Maia started to build momentum in the Hokies favor with an impressive straight-set victory for he second-straight ACC victory, 6-4, 6-4. Fishback battled against one of the best players in the country, No. 5 Melios Efstathiou and gained an early lead in the second set but Efstathiou proved to be too much winning the court one showdown, 6-3, 6-3.

Alberto Orso showed his grit and tenacity in a tight second set after losing the first set 6-1. The Vincenza, Italy native had fought to a 6-6 tie but ran out of gas in the tiebreak, falling 6-1, 7-6(1). Scott Sculley and Frank Thompson’s matches were abandoned due to Wake Forest clinching the match.
