Spartan’s Women’s Tennis Caps Off Opening Weekend


ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan State women’s tennis team wrapped up its opening weekend events at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor and the Western Michigan Fall Invite at Kalamazoo. The Spartans saw six total single wins and four doubles victories over three days.
 
WOLVERINE INVITATIONAL
In her collegiate debut on Friday, Ria Bhakta paired with Issey Purser to defeat Ohio State’s duo Dani Schoenly and Megan Basil, 6-3. Bhakta earned her first career doubles victory and capped off an impressive weekend going 2-1 in singles play.
 
Matilde Morais also made her debut in the Green and White. She earned her first victory as she and Liisa Vehvilainen got the winning started on Saturday morning when they defeated the Princeton tandem of Isabella Chhiv and Leena Bennetto, 6-4.
 
MSU faced off against Ohio State in four single matches on Saturday where the two teams split, 2-2. Vehvilainen was victorious over Akanksha Bhan, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Bhakta got in the singles win column defeating Schoenly, 6-0, and 6-3.
 
The Spartans were able to close out Sunday on a strong note defeating Princeton in three out of four single matches. Vehvilainen, Morais, and Bhakta were winners over Princeton.
 
WESTERN MICHIGAN FALL INVITE
The duo of Makenna Martinez and Sarah Fazlagic picked up their first victory on the young season with a 6-2 victory over Oakland. Fazlagic continued her three-win weekend with a second doubles victory as she partnered with Marlo Schiffman to down Marquette, 6-3, and finalized with a singles victory over Oakland, 3-6, 6-3, 10-4. Schiffman went 1-1 in singles play.
 
Michigan State will be back in action when it hosts the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Thursday, Oct. 12 – Oct 16.
