Spartans Open B1G Season at Nebraska, Wisconsin This Weekend


EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 74 Michigan State men’s tennis is back in action this weekend, hitting the road to start conference play by facing No. 45 Nebraska on Friday, March 24 and No. 52 Wisconsin on Sunday, March 26.
 
Friday’s match against the Cornhuskers is slated to begin at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT, while Sunday’s dual against the Badgers is set for 1 p.m. ET / noon CT. Live scoring and streaming will be available on MSUSpartans.com.
 
MSU heads into the weekend 6-7 (0-0 B1G) after going 1-2 in the Arizona State Spring Break Tournament from March 10-12. The Spartans took on a trio of ranked opponents following up their losses to No. 50 Texas Tech and No. 69 Liberty with a 4-1 win over No. 61 Drake. The ranked duo of Ozan Baris and Max Sheldon picked up their fifth win of the season in doubles while both Spartans picked up straight set wins in singles to secure MSU’s second victory over the Bulldogs this season.
 
In the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released on March 21, Baris and Sheldon jumped  to No. 17 in doubles while Baris moved to No. 51 in singles. This week’s rankings mark the Spartans’ third-straight week ranked in the ITA team rankings.
 
No. 45 Nebraska heads into the weekend at 8-5 (0-0 B1G), and is currently on a four-match win streak with two wins over ranked opponents in that span. The Cornhuskers are led in singles by Sophomore Roni Hietaranta who occupies a 6-4 record at the No. 1 singles position. In doubles, the duo of William Gleason and Calvin Mueller are 11-2 this spring and are coming off a second-place finish at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship earlier this month. Nebraska leads the all-time series, 9-7, and took last season’s contest in East Lansing, 4-3.
 
No. 52 Wisconsin starts the weekend at 7-5 and hosts No. 5 Michigan on Friday, March 24 before ending the weekend against the Spartans. The Badgers are coming off a dominant 6-1 win at home against No. 53 Penn last Sunday. Wisconsin is led by senior Sebastian Vile who owns an 18-5 record, including a 9-3 mark in singles. The doubles pairing of Gabriel Huber and Michael Minasyan are currently ranked at No. 41 in the latest ITA Rankings and occupy a 4-5 record this season. The Badgers lead the all-time series, 43-37, and have taken the last six meetings between the two squads.
