STANFORD, Calif. – Washington took a while to find its footing at Taube Tennis Stadium in its Pac-12 opener against 30th-ranked Stanord, and despite rallying on several courts, the Huskies couldn’t turn around enough courts, falling 4-0.
Stanford (10-4, 2-0 Pac-12) took a fast doubles point and won first sets on five of six singles courts, before the Huskies raised their level and started to battle back on several courts. Dzianis Zharyn and Han-Chih Lin each won their second sets to force thirds, but did not get to finish. Cesar Bouchelaghem was the one Dawg to win the first set, and he was at 5-6 in set two serving for a tiebreak, but he likewise did not finish after the Cardinal clinched.
The clincher came on court five, where freshman Ivan Sodan had stepped things up after a 2-6 first set loss to 81st-ranked Neel Rajesh. Sodan served for the second set at 5-4, but got broken, and Rajesh held and broke again for the 7-5 win to end the match.
Stanford also had straight set wins on courts four and six, with Kyle Kang beating Nedim Suko at No. 4, and Hudson Rivera defeating Jim Hendrikx at No. 6.
Washington will look to earn its first conference win tomorrow on the other side of the Bay against California. That match is set for a 2 p.m. start in Berkeley.
