Singles Play Highlights Opening Day for Cougars at Hawaii Invitational

HONOLULU (January 5, 2023)Eva Alvarez Sande, Elyse Tse and Yang Lee each captured singles victories to highlight Washington State’s first day of play at the 2023 Weinman Foundation Invitational Thursday, played at the University of Hawaii Tennis Courts.

In Thursday’s hidden dual format, the Cougars faced No. 12 California and Hawaii in both singles and doubles matches. WSU picked up three straight-set singles wins to begin its 2023 spring schedule as freshman Alvarez Sande posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Hawaii’s Madison Kim. Tse, a sophomore from New Zealand, had little trouble with Hawaii’s Klara Novakova while the senior Lee defeated Rita Pinto from Hawaii, 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles action, the Cougars forced a pair of tiebreakers as Hawaii’s Nikola Homolkova and Novakova escaped with a 7-6 (5) win over Tse and Lee, while Cal’s Erin Richardson and Cami Brown came away with a 7-6 (1) win over Stefaniia Mikhailova and Tiffany Phout.

Play continues Friday at the Weinman Foundation Invitational.
