Iga Swiatek will tap into a musical muse to prepare for her US Open title defense.
Asked what she’s most excited about in her return to New York, Swiatek offered a one-word response: “Broadway.”
Allaster: US Open Ball is in WTA’s Court
In the aftermath of her three-set Cincinnati semifinal loss to Coco Gauff today, Swiatek shared her mission statement for defending Flushing Meadows: Fight.
“I know from my experience already that being a defending champion is not easy,” Swiatek told the media in Cincinnati. “I’m going to kind of take it easy on myself and just try to do everything step by step.
“Last year’s tournament was also really tough. I could be out in the fourth round if you watched my matches. So I’ll just fight and I’ll see how it’s going to go.”
The world No. 1 will carry a 53-9 record into New York and plans to hit the practice court next week.
“When I lose, I always fight and I always try my best,” Swiatek said. “Even if I’m playing not the best tennis, I can still play kind of even tennis to my opponents. That’s a positive thing.
“But for sure, the key is to win. I’ll just work on these things that I have in mind because there are things I want to do better at the US Open. Finally actually I’ll have time to work on that because this season we didn’t really have a lot of time to practice.”
