Sarr Named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week – University of South Carolina Athletics

Columbia, S.C. – The Southeastern Conference has announced South Carolina men’s tennis freshman Jelani Sarr as its Co-Freshman of the Week for the first week of the season.

Sarr, a native of Baltimore, Md., started his dual match career with three clinches – two in singles and one in doubles – through South Carolina’s first three matches.

During the first round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend, Sarr clinched South Carolina’s win over rival Clemson in a three-setter 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 from the No. 3 spot in the lineup, giving the Gamecocks their ninth straight win over the Tigers.

In the second round, Sarr and partner Lucas Andrade da Silva clinched the doubles point against LSU in a 7-5 result to improve to 6-4 together this season.

Sarr then went on to clinch his second straight match, defeating Rudy Ceccon of LSU 6-2, 7-6(5) at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, sending South Carolina to its third consecutive ITA Indoor National Championships.

Sarr is now 14-7 overall in singles and has five ranked wins on his resume with his highest over No. 17 Kenta Miyoshi in straight sets.

He shares the SEC Freshman of the Week honor with Texas A&M’s Tiago Pires. Tennessee’s Johannus Monday earned the SEC Player of the Week honor.

Sarr and the No. 2 ranked Gamecocks will be in action next on Fri., Feb. 2 at 4:00 p.m., hosting NC State at the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center. Admission and parking are both free and the event is open to the public.
