CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second consecutive season, University of Miami women’s tennis associate head coach Alex Santos is the ITA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year, as announced Tuesday morning.
Santos has now claimed the prestigious distinction in two of the three years of his second stint at The U, as he returned to Coral Gables in advance of the 2021 campaign. Santos also worked at Miami from the fall of 2009 through the spring of 2013, the latter three seasons as an assistant coach.
The Oeiras, Portugal, native also won ITA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2013, giving him the accolade in three of his last four seasons at Miami across his two stops. The first time he received the plaudit, he also became the second person in program history to win the national award.
This year, Santos helped lead the Hurricanes to a 16-8 (9-4) record and six top-25 victories, including one over an NC State team that finished fourth and reached the NCAA title match. Miami advanced to the NCAA Team Championship Round of 32 and finished No. 16 in the ITA national rankings.
At least one member of the Miami program has now garnered an ITA regional award in eight of the past nine years, including each of the past six dating back to 2018.
