WACO, Texas – Florida women’s tennis returns to Waco, Texas, after less than a week away to matchup with Big 12-foe Baylor at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday.
The No. 18 Gators (2-1, 0-0 SEC) meet Baylor (5-1, 0-0 Big 12) after last season’s matchup with the Bears was canceled.
THE SERIES
Baylor and Florida meet for the eighth time in program history on Sunday in a series that the Gators lead, 7-0. The Orange & Blue are a perfect 2-0 in Waco during the seven-game winning streak, and the two teams most recently met on Feb. 13, 2016 in a match where Florida earned a 4-0 victory.
LAST TIME OUT
The Gators participated in a rainy weekend of the ITA Kickoff weekend at College Station, Texas on the campus of Texas A&M. Florida picked-up a dominant 4-0 victory over Arizona after nearly a two-day delay before falling to No. 4 Texas A&M, 4-2, in the regional finale. Sara Dahlstrom provided impressive consistency, winning both of her matches at the four singles position without dropping a set, including a dominant 6-1, 6-3, victory over No. 51 Jayci Goldsmith of Texas A&M. Emily De Oliveira also picked-up a ranked victory, downing the Aggies’ No. 105 Jeanette Mireless, 6-0, 7-6 at the six singles slot. Against Arizona, Carly Briggs played clincher at the top singles position for the Gators.
ITA RANKINGS
The Gators find themselves ranked No. 18 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, with Anastasia Sysoeva ranked No. 63 in singles competition and the duo of Rachel Gailis and Bente Spee ranked No. 58 in doubles play.
WELCOME HOME
Jeremy Bayon was named the women’s tennis assistant coach on Friday, Jan. 20, by head coach Roland Thornqvist. Bayon returns to Gainesville after previously serving as an assistant for the Florida men’s squad from 2003-2012. During his stint in Gainesville, he helped the Gators to a Final Four appearance in 2005, as well as winning the SEC tournament championships in 2005 and 2011. The Gators were ranked in the top-10 nationally in eight of his nine seasons with the Orange & Blue. He assisted in producing 15 All-Americans and three SEC Players of the Year. He most recently served as the head coach for the Georgia Southern men’s tennis squad.
