LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Arizona Women’s Tennis Team finished their three-day ITA Sectionals Championship with Castillo and Ostrzygalo coming out on top in the Consolation draw.
Saturday
Saturday morning both Wildcats kicked off their matches at 10:00am. Castillo pulled away with the straight set win 6-4, 7-5 against #106 Berta Passola Folch (UC Berkeley). Ostrzygalo also came out on top in her match, 7(6)6, 6-4 against Mila Stanojevic (CU). Both Castillo and Ostrzygalo walked away as Co-Champions of the Consolation draw after finishing 3-1 in the tournament and beating four ranked players along the way.
Friday
Castillo started her Friday morning off strong, defeating #90 Yujia Huang (BYU) in a straight set win 6-1, 6-4. Ostrzygalo pulled off an impressive win, taking down #110 Ahmani Gichard (UCLA) in a 10-point tie-breaker 20-18. Both players advanced to the semi-finals of the consolation draw.
Thursday
This past weekend the Wildcats sent Midori Castillo, Martyna Ostrzygalo, and Tanvi Narendran to compete against some of the best players in the region. Unfortunately, all three singles players fell in their first round, Narendran being the only one to go to three sets. Things turned around for the Wildcats in the consolation draw though. Ostrzygalo was able to pull off a straight set win in her first round in the consolation draw against Rixt Van Der Werff (CU) 6-1, 6-4. She received a second round bye and was scheduled to play Friday morning. Narendran fell to her opponent 3-6, 2-6 in the first round of the consolation draw and had no further matches scheduled. Castillo took down #30 Jessica Alsola (UC Berkeley) in a hard fought battle 7-6(5), 6-2. She also received a second round bye and was scheduled to play Friday morning.
