Quartet of NC State players headed to NCAA championships

RALEIGH The NCAA announced its field of 64 singles and 32 doubles for the tennis championships on Tuesday.

Four NC State players will continue their season when the team championships conclude.

Rafa Izquierdo Luque will compete in the singles and doubles’ field. Izquierdo Luque, a graduate from Santiago de Compostella, Spain, was an at-large selection.

Izquierdo Luque is currently ranked No. 57 in the ITA standings as a singles player. He’ll pair with Joe Wayand in the doubles field. That duo, also an at-large bid, is currently ranked No. 22 in the ITA. It’s the first time since 2014 that the program has sent a doubles team to the NCAA championships. It’s the first time two doubles’ squads made the championship field.

Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli, ranked 19th, will join Izquierdo Luque and Wayand.

Earlier this week Catry and Staeheli were named All-ACC second team. Izquierdo Luque and Wayand were voted second team.

The singles and doubles competition will take place May 22-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The NC State team will start NCAA play on Saturday versus Oklahoma in Athens, Ga.
