Qualifying Hopes Still Alive

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team produced a mixed bag of results on day one of the ITA Sectional Championships hosted by Florida State.

Sophomore Danil Panarin opened the day for the Dores in a singles matchup against Florida State’s Alex Bulte. The No. 22 ranked Panarin dropped the opening set 6-4, but bounced back in the second 7-5 to even the match. The comeback effort fell just short, however, as Bulte pulled away in the final set, outlasting Panarin 6-1 to seal the match and advance.

With Vanderbilt’s NCAA Championships qualifying hopes on the line, sophomore Hugo Coquelin delivered for the Dores. Coquelin faced Niels Ratiu of Georgia in his opening match, downing the Bulldog in the first frame 7-6 (2). Ratiu clawed back in the next, cruising to a 6-1 second set victory. Coquelin did not allow Ratiu any closer, clamping down in the third set with a 6-3 win to move on.

Coquelin returns to play tomorrow in the singles round of 16 against another SEC opponent, Kentucky’s Jack Loutit. Friday’s action is set to begin at 9 a.m. CT. The updated tournament page is online.
