Qavia Lopez Named SEC Freshman of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama– The Southeastern Conference has named No. 109 Qavia Lopez Freshman of the Week after an impressive performance at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. Lopez currently holds an 8-2 record in singles and is now 7-6 in doubles play.

No. 109 Qavia Lopez went undefeated in doubles play, securing two weekend victories with partner Carly Briggs. Lopez and Briggs ignited their win streak by defeating No. 13 Auburn’s Selin Ovunc and Carolyn Ansari 6-3. The duo carried their momentum into Sunday’s contest against No. 17 Alabama’s Anne Marie Hiser and Priya Nelson grabbing a quick 6-0 win. With two victories, Lopez and Briggs played a vital part in Florida securing the double’s point in both weekend matchups.

Qavia Lopez also had a strong performance in the singles category starting with a tough matchup against Auburn’s Adeline Flach. In the first set, Lopez fell 6-3 but immediately bounced back to take the second set 6-3 and force a third. The final set played out similarly with Lopez securing a 6-3 victory to claim the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Qavia Lopez’s second singles contest of the week was cut short due to Florida clinching a 4-0 victory over Alabama, nonetheless, Lopez held the lead once more. After winning the first set 6-3, Lopez held the lead over Anna Parkhomenko at 5-4 in the second set and was starting to close in on her fourth victory of the weekend before the match was called.

As a whole, Florida finished out the weekend with back-to-back ranked wins against then-ranked No. 13 Auburn and No. 17 Alabama.
