MALIBU, Calif. – Sophomore Soham Purohit continued his winning ways this fall as he reached the round of 16 at the ITA West Sectionals hosted by Pepperdine. Purohit needs two more wins to earn a trip to the NCAA Singles Championships.
Sectionals are a new qualifying tournament for players to earn tickets to NCAAs, which is being held in the fall for the first time in recent history. Senior Cesar Bouchelaghem already has a spot booked for the Dawgs.
Purohit, Nedim Suko, and Dzianis Zharyn all played singles matches on Thursday, with Purohit the only one moving on. He defeated BYU’s Wally Thayne in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5.
Suko dropped his round of 32 match against 96th-ranked Alexander Hoogmartens, 6-3, 6-2. Zharyn fell to Youssef Kadiri of Nevada, 7-6, 6-4.
Zharyn and Bouchelaghem also played doubles but fell to 11th-ranked Thayne/Fuchs of BYU, 6-4, 7-6.
Purohit is scheduled to play UCLA’s Aadarsh Tripathi at 12:30 p.m. Friday in the round of 16. Semifinalists and two quarterfinal playoff winners will take six tickets to NCAAs.
