Perfect Day For UNC At ITA Fall Nationals

SAN DIEGO – North Carolina women’s tennis has three of the eight players remaining in the singles draw and one doubles team into the quarterfinals after Thursday’s action at the 2022 ITA Fall National Championships from Barnes Tennis Center. No. 1 seed Fiona Crawley, No. 3 seed Abbey Forbes and Carson Tanguilig all reached the quarters in singles, while Crawley and Tanguilig advanced in doubles.

Crawley made quick work of upstart Taylor Melville of Denver, 6-3, 6-0, to be the first Tar Heel to reach the quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. The top seed will now pivot to Friday’s matchup with Texas A&M’s Mary Stoiana in a rematch of their ITA All-American Championship quarterfinal last month in Cary, N.C.

Crawley lost her only set this fall in 14 matches to Stoiana, but rallied to capture the final two sets and would go on to win the title two days later.

Forbes and Tanguilig both had to battle back after losing their opening sets to Ohio State’s Sydni Ratliff and Barry’s Deniz Khazan, respectively.

Forbes ultimately was too much for the Buckeye sophomore in notching the 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory. Meanwhile, Tanguilig was facing Khazan, a 28-year old from Division II Barry University that was ranked No. 200 in the WTA back in 2018. Carolina’s sophomore sensation rallied from her first-set setback to earn a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory.

All three main draw singles matches and Anika Yarlagadda’s consolation match on Friday will begin at 1 p.m. ET.

In doubles, No. 2 seed Crawley and Tanguilig took care of New Mexico’s Leonie Hoppe and Katherine Jhang, 6-0, 6-3.

The three that advanced in the main draw continue on their quest to add their name to an impressive list of previous winners from Carolina’s program. Jamie Loeb was the first to win the singles championship back in 2013 and was later joined in consecutive seasons by title winners Sara Daavettila in 2019 and Alexa Graham in 2020.

Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay won the doubles event in 2015 and last fall Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty brought the trophy back to Chapel Hill in 2021.

All of the action from the 2022 ITA Fall National Championships will be streamed on the Cracked Racquets YouTube Page. Links to the live streams can be found on the Event Page.
