No. 9 Cal Trounces WSU 6-1

Jessica Alsola clinched a Cal victory for the second time this season with her win at WSU.


PULLMAN, Wash. – Jessica Alsola clinched the No. 9 California women’s tennis team’s 6-1 victory over Washington State on Saturday, beating Yura Nakagawa in singles at the WSU Outdoor Courts.
 
Cal’s record improved to 16-4 (8-1 Pac-12) after finishing a sweep of the Washington teams, with the Bears winning 6-1 at No. 26 Washington on Friday. Washington State is 10-10 (1-8).
 
The Bears took a 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point. Berta Passola Folch and Tiziana-Marie Schomburg defeated WSU’s Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov, 6-1, on court three, and then the 22nd-ranked duo of Hannah Viller Moeller and Mao Mushika beat Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse, 6-1, on court one to wrap up doubles in about half an hour.
 
Cal junior Lan Mi gave Cal a 2-0 lead when she topped Martina Markov, 6-1, 6-1, on court 6.
 
Alvarez Sande upset the 39th-ranked Viller Moeller, 6-3 6-0, on court one for the Cougars’ lone singles win to make the score 2-1.
 
The 42nd-ranked Katja Wiersholm posted a 6-1, 6-2 result over Tse on court two before Alsola, ranked 72nd, bested Nakagawa, 6-4, 6-4, court three. Her win gave Cal the official victory with a 4-1 lead, and the Bears tacked on wins by Berta Passola Folch (3-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Abouelsaad) and Mao Mushika (6-2, 3-6, 6-4 over Fifa Kumhom) to complete their 6-1 result.
 
“It was really good to get to play two outdoor matches this weekend,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “Sometimes when we come up here we don’t get to play outside, but today was actually a nice day for tennis. We did a really good job of getting the doubles point quickly and carried it over into singles. I was pleased with the adjustment we made from yesterday and proud of the consistency we showed between the two days, facilities and court speeds we faced up here. That’s what it takes to be one of the top teams at the end of the season and at the end of May, and that’s where we’re keeping our focus.”
 
Cal next hosts the regular-season finale vs. No. 3 Stanford on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in a match with big conference implications. The Bears are currently tied with UCLA and USC for the Pac-12 lead, with each team boasting…
