GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 8 ranked Gators will remain on their home courts this weekend as they host FIU, Wake Forest, and San Diego, in this year’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Kickoff Weekend.
Florida will initiate play at the Alfred A. Ring Complex on Saturday as they take on FIU in the first matchup of the weekend. Doubles will go out at 11 a.m. with singles immediately following. Once the two Florida-based teams determine a winner, Wake Forest and San Diego will begin play at 2 p.m.
Depending on Saturday’s outcomes, Florida will either go on to face Wake Forest or San Diego on Sunday. Sunday’s consolation match is set for 11 a.m. and the ITA Kickoff Championship match is set for 2 p.m.
The team that advances out of Sunday’s championship match will punch their ticket to the Indoor National Championships from Feb. 9-12 in Seattle hosted by the University of Washington.
HEAD COACH ROLAND THORNQVIST SAYS
UF Head Coach Roland Thornqvist on what to expect this weekend:
“There are some fantastic teams here this weekend, starting with FIU tomorrow. We saw three of their players make it deep in our regional championship this fall. So, we know we know better be on our P’s and Q’s tomorrow, which is awesome. This is what we want. We want to host this tournament and have the best chance to advance to indoors.”

“I thought we were off to a pretty good start last weekend with Baylor, we got our bell rung a little bit in doubles and got challenged on several singles courts but, we’ve had an outstanding week of practice. Just about everybody has improved remarkably from where we were in Vegas so, we are quietly optimistic about our performance this weekend.”
LAST TIME OUT
The Gators are coming off a dominating 6-1 win over Baylor last Saturday to start the spring season with a 1-0 record. Florida totaled five singles and two doubles wins against the Bears last weekend. From the singles category Alicia Dudeney, Rachel Gailis, Emily De Oliveira, Qavia Lopez, and Sarah Dahlstrom, all picked up wins for Florida.
In doubles, Bente Spee and Alicia Dudney picked up an immediate 6-1 victory over Baylor’s Sierra Berry and Brooke Thompson, followed by a 7-5 win from freshman pair Malwina Rowniska/Qavia Lopez to secure the doubles point for Florida.
