CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team (9-6, 1-4 ACC) recorded its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season Friday afternoon, defeating No. 43 Notre Dame, 4-3, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes (9-6, 1-4 ACC) not only earned their first conference win on Friday, but also tallied their first win over a ranked opponent this spring, taking down No. 43 Notre Dame (10-8, 1-4 ACC).
The Fighting Irish took an early 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point with a pair of victories on courts one and three. The Notre Dame duo of Connor Fu and Jean-Marc Malkowski defeated Juan Martin Jalif and Martin Vergara, 7-6 (9), while Miami’s sophomore Martin Katz and freshman Antonio Prat fell, 5-7, at third doubles.
Katz quickly tied the match at one-all, recording a 6-1, 6-2 victory at second singles and moving to 4-3 in dual match play this season.
Prat gave Miami its first lead of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court three. Fifth-year senior Franco Aubone followed Prat with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 showing at sixth singles to put Miami ahead, 3-1.
Notre Dame cut the lead to one when Aditya Vashistha defeated graduate student Leo Bierbaum, 6-3, 6-3, at fourth singles, but the Hurricanes would not be denied as freshman Nacho Serra Sanchez took down Yu Zhang, 6-3, 6-1, on court six to clinch the match for Miami.
No. 43 Sebastian Dominko and No. 44 Dan Martin played a three-set thriller at first singles, but Dominko ultimately prevailed in the third set tiebreak, posting a 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 (6) victory.
The Hurricanes return to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Sunday, March 19 to host the No. 29 Louisville Cardinals. First serve in Coral Gables, Fla., is set for 12 p.m.
