No. 25 Men's Tennis Set for ITA Kickoff Weekend at USC


The No. 25 UCLA men’s tennis team (2-0) will hit the road, but stay in Los Angeles, for ITA Kickoff Weekend on the campus of USC. The Bruins meet Memphis (0-1) in Saturday’s opener, with first serve set for 11 a.m. PT. The host No. 7 Trojans (2-0) then take on Vanderbilt (0-0) at 2 p.m. The consolation match begins Sunday at 11 a.m., to be followed by the championship contest at 2 p.m. The overall winner earns a spot in the 2023 ITA Team Indoor Championship event, to be played Feb. 17-20 at the XS Tennis Village in Chicago.

UCLA capped a successful opening weekend with a 4-3 victory against No. 19 Pepperdine at Los Angeles Tennis Center (Jan. 21). Azuma Visaya clinched the win at 4-2. Alexander Hoogmartens and Patrick Zahraj were also triumphant on the singles courts. Hoogmartens also helped secure the doubles point following an extended tiebreaker. One day earlier, the Bruins opened their 2023 dual-match season in the win column, prevailing 7-0 versus Hawai’i at home. Honolulu native Visaya also posted the clinching victory in his debut, while Zahraj, Jeffrey Fradkin, Giacomo Revelli and Aadarsh Tripathi each won twice across singles and doubles competitions.

UCLA has never faced Memphis on the tennis courts. A meeting with Vanderbilt would represent a fourth overall. The Bruins have prevailed twice previously, most recently notching a 4-0 win in the third round of the 2013 NCAA Championships in Urbana, Ill. They finished that season as the national runner-up. UCLA holds a record of 87-56 versus USC. In the latest chapter, the Bruins picked up the first two points before dropping the final four on senior day at Los Angeles Tennis Center. Alexander Hoogmartens and Bryce Pereira won a top-court tiebreaker 7-4 in the final doubles match. Pereira then raced out to a straight-set win. Ryan Colby clinched the victory for the Trojans.
