No. 23 Illini Set to Take on Notre Dame


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 23 Fighting Illini men’s tennis team will travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete against Notre Dame at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Eck Tennis Pavilion.  

Men’s Tennis Takes Down No. 17 North Carolina From Okonkwo Clinch

The Illini are coming off a big upset win over No. 17 North Carolina at Atkins Tennis Center on Feb. 3. 

Illinois took the match 4-2, with Oliver Okonkwo clinching the win, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. 

Karlis Ozolins and Hunter Heck took another doubles win over Will Jansen and Karl Poling, 6-4. The win marks the duo’s 13th of the season. 

Singles had a hot start with Ozolins and Heck winning their matches almost simultaneously – first Heck against Poling 6-2, 6-2, followed by Ozolins beating Jansen, 6-3, 6-2. 

Following a loss from William Mroz, Miyoshi took a win over Benjamin Kittay, 6-4, 6-4, setting the stage for Okonkwo’s clincher. 

Alex Petrov was also locked in a tight battle with Philip Jordan that ultimately went unfinished, 5-7, 6-3, 4-3 (unf.).

Scouting Report

The Fighting Irish are coming off a home doubleheader sweep over Auburn (5-1) and Toledo (4-0) last Sunday.  

Prior to the two wins, Notre Dame lost to No. 13 Michigan (6-1) in Ann Arbor, with the lone point coming from Yu Zhang when he beat U-M’s Nicholas Steiglehner 1-6, 7-6, 1-0 (5).
