No. 22 Illinois men’s tennis recorded its first Big Ten road win of the season on Friday afternoon, taking down Purdue, 4-0, at Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The Illini took care of business in singles and doubles play, refusing to drop a single set in the sweep of the Boilermakers.
The partnership of Kenta Miyoshi and Alex Petrov got things going on court 3, clinching a 6-1 decision before Hunter Heck and Lucas Horve secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory on court 2. Karlis Ozolins and Oliver Okonkwo led their match, 4-3, on court 1, though it went unfinished.
Illinois carried that momentum into singles play, setting the tone early with the Illini winning the first set in all six matches. William Mroz extended the Illinois advantage to 2-0 with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win on court 3, the first Big Ten singles victory of his career.
Okonkwo pushed the Illini within a point of victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court 4 before Miyoshi put the match away with a 6-4, 6-4 decision on court 6.
With the win, the Illini improved to 14-8 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play. Illinois will remain on the road to round out its weekend slate, taking on Indiana at IU Tennis Center on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
