SEATTLE – The No. 21 Huskies women’s tennis team (6-1) fell to the eighth-seeded NC State Wolfpack 4-1 Friday night in round one of the ITA National Team Indoors at Nordstrom Tennis Center.

The Dawgs will face Pac-12 opponent No. 16 USC tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. at the NTC. The Trojans lost Friday afternoon to No. 1 North Carolina, 4-1.

Washington had a few close chances to clinch the doubles point but couldn’t capitalize, heading into singles needing four wins.

Erika Matsuda and Sarah-Maude Fortin fell 6-4 to the No. 9 doubles pair Zampardo/Rajecki to bring the pressure to courts 1 and 3. No. 1 doubles Alexia Jacobs and Astrid Olsen defeated the Wolfpack’s pair of Zyryanova and Abrams, the No. 6 doubles pair in the nation, 6-3.

Dariya Detkovskaya and Melissa Sakar (No. 3) came back from being down 0-3 to tie things up but dropped the match 5-7 to give NC State the doubles point.

Sakar’s 6-4, 6-2 onslaught on singles court four was the first and only point earned for the Huskies this evening. Mel’s two set win was against NC State’s Abrams, who’s ranked No. 33 in the country in singles.

Washington’s top four courts all faced singles players in the top 40, with Matsuda playing the highest ranked player (NC State’s No. 10 Rajecki). Matsuda took the match to three sets but couldn’t hold on – dropping the match 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

After dropping her first set, Jacobs bounced back for a dominant 6-0 second set win over No. 40 Rencheli. Jacobs was down 2-3 in the third set before the Wolfpack’s No. 1 clinched the match, 4-1.
