SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Washington was unable to stop the recent hot streak from 18th-ranked San Diego, which beat two top-20 teams a week ago and was too tough today on its home courts. Senior Han-Chih Lin was able to upset a ranked opponent in singles for his third-straight win, but the Toreros took the rest of the points for a 6-1 victory.
Washington has spent the past three weeks on the road and will look to turn a corner next Saturday when it returns home to host Arkansas on Feb. 17 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
In doubles, UW was in a battle on the top two courts and needed both after a 2-6 loss on court three. 10th-ranked Zharyn/Bouchelaghem were in a top-25 showdown on the top court against 21st-ranked Sharrma/Klaasen, and that match was locked at 5-5, but San Diego clinched on court two with a 6-4 win from Vasa/Tarvet over UW’s Suko/Sodan.
Moving on to singles, San Diego put the Huskies’ backs against the wall with victories on courts five and six to make it 3-0. The Huskies did have a path if they could force some third sets on courts one, two, and four, but San Diego’s Lambert Ruland broke a 4-4 second set tie with Dzianis Zharyn and clinched the match, 6-2, 6-4.
From there, USD extended its lead as 3rd-ranked Oliver Tarvet gave Cesar Bouchelaghem his first dual match loss of the season, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot, and Nedim Suko dropped a 6-3, 6-4 match at No. 4 against Sacchitt Sharrma.
Lin didn’t let the Huskies go home empty-handed, as he won his third-straight at No. 3 singles, and got his first ranked win of the season, beating 52nd-ranked Iiro Vasa, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Lin’s next victory will be number 50 on his career.
