LOS ANGELES – The No. 16 ranked USC women’s tennis team suffered their first loss of the season to No. 20 San Diego at the Hogan Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 3. 
 
With the loss, USC drops to to 4-1, while San Diego improves to 2-2. 
 
The Trojans came up short in doubles as Naomi Cheong and Lily Fairclough would fall 6-2 on court three to San Diego’s Claudia De Las Heras and Jordyn McBride. Moments later, USC’s No. 10 ranked duo of Eryn Cayetano and Emma Charney defeated the Torero duo of Elizabeth Goldsmith and Mia Mack with a 6-2 score line on center court. The doubles point was decided on court two, with No. 29 Parker Fry and Grace Piper falling to San Diego’s Evans/Nordikyan. 
 
As singles play began, San Diego would extend their lead, with Elizabeth Goldsmith defeating No. 42 ranked Naomi Cheong 6-0, 6-2 on court three. 
 
USC’s first point of the day came from freshman Lily Fairclough on court six. Fairclough beat Torero Filippa BruuSyversen 6-2, 6-4 to put the Trojans on the board.
 
Cayetano kept the momentum going as she swiftly followed up Fairclough’s win with a victory of her own on court five. The USC-fifth year beat San Diego’s Abigail Desiatnikov 6-1, 6-3 to put the Trojans in front.
 
No. 66 ranked Grace Piper put the Trojans one point away from a win as she took her singles match on court four, defeating Jordyn McBride 7-5, 6-2.
 
The Toreros didn’t let up as No. 89 ranked Mia Mack would down No. 22 ranked Emma Charney 6-4, 6-4 to bring the score to three points all. 
 
The match was decided on center court as a three set victory would eventually go in San Diego’s favor when Claudia De Las Heras defeated No. 33 ranked Snow Han 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. 
 
USC is back in action next weekend as the Trojans travel up north to Seattle for the 2024 ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
