DURHAM – In the first of two matches of the day, the 15th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team registered a 7-0 victory over NC Central on Thursday morning inside Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
The Blue Devils improved to 2-0 on the season and collected their 16th consecutive home victory in Sheffield. NC Central dropped to 0-1 on the year.
How It Happened
- On court one, the Duke duo of Emma Jackson and Ellie Coleman cruised to a 6-0 victory to open doubles action against Kennedy Hill and Candice Bernier.
- For the first time this season, the Blue Devil duo of Iuliia Bryzgalova and Karolina Berankova teamed together to register a 6-1 win over Lafi Joao and Jade Houston.Bryzgalova and Berankova dropped the first game of the match, but responded by winning six straight to clinch the doubles point.
- On court three, Shavit Kimchi and Katie Codd also played together for the first time and registered a 6-1 win against Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and Patricia Palencia.Kimchi and Codd won the first three games, before NCCU collected its lone victory to cut the lead to 3-1.
- Duke continued its solid play in singles by winning the first set on all six courts.
- Berankova put the second point on the board on court six as she totaled a 6-2, 6-2 win over Isabelle Exsted.After dropping the first game of the match, Berankova only dropped three more the rest of the way as she earned her 25th career singles win.
- Codd, on court four, didn’t drop a game as she collected a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Hill to put the Blue Devils ahead, 3-0.
- Duke’s 65th-ranked Kimchi then clinched the victory for the Blue Devils with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Houston on court two.Kimchi, who is from Israel, only dropped two out of her first 12 games en route to her first career dual match win.
- Seeing action at No. 1 singles, Jackson won her first five games and eventually won the first set, 6-1 against Hidalgo Vega.Jackson dropped the first game of the second set but then put Duke ahead, 5-0, with a 6-2 second set win.
- Coleman, who played Bernier at No. 3 singles, registered a 6-2, 6-1 win to put the sixth point on the board for the Blue Devils.
