TUCSON, Ariz. – Oregon men’s tennis dropped their match today against No. 12 ranked Arizona 4-1. Vlad Breazu got his third win in a row, and Joshua Charlton and Quinn Vandecasteele were in nail-biting matches against ITA ranked players when the match was clinched by Arizona.
A strong performance from the Wildcats doubles teams got things started in this one. Arizona took early leads on all three courts, getting their first win on court one, 6-2. Ivailo Keremedchiev and Jesper Klov-Nilsson were in a tight one when U of A secured the doubles points after a 6-4 win on court three. Oregon’s singles lineup would need to win four matches to come from behind and win.
The final score would not end up reflecting how hard the Ducks fought in this one. Ray Lo was forced into an early exit due to injury and Klov-Nilsson was swept in his match, giving Arizona a 3-0 lead. Oregon battled back and got a point from Vlad Breazu on court five with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 victory. It was the freshman’s third-straight win and his twelfth of the season. Charlton grinded out a 7-6(7) first set win and Quinn Vandecasteele took his first set 6-4, leaving the Ducks within striking distance.
Ivailo Keremedchiev got a huge second set win to force a third set on court four and the Ducks still had life. With Charlton in a second-set tie breaker and Vandecasteele up a point in the third set against the No. 32 ranked ITA player, Arizona clinched the match on court four.
Oregon will hope for the same fight and a different result on Sunday, facing ASU at 10:30 a.m. PT.
