BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 10 USC men’s tennis team came up short against Pac-12 rival Cal on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 to the Golden Bears at the Hellman Tennis Complex. With the loss USC drops to 12-7, 2-2.
The Trojans secured an early lead following victories on courts one and three in doubles. Cal won on court two before USC’s Wojtek Marek and Samuel Rubell would defeat Banthia/Overbeck 6-3 on center court. With the doubles point still up for grabs, Ryan Colby and Stefan Dostanic battled to beat Philip Hjorth and Yuta Kikuchi 6-4 on court three.
Carrying a one-point advantage into singles play, USC quickly fell behind as Cal would pick up two points with singles wins on courts one and six. No. 35 Stefan Dostanic fell to No. 37 Yutak Kikuchi on center court before Samuel Rubell lost to Philip Hjorth on court six. With Cal in the lead by one, it was Trojan #36 Peter Makk who’d even the score, beating former Trojan Ryder Jackson 6-2, 6-4 on court two. Senior Bradley Frye put the Trojans on top as he beat Derrick Chen 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. Ryan Colby fell 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 on court five to Cal’s Siddhant Banthia, evening the score once more. The match was decided on court three as Carl Emil Overbeck beat Lodewijk Weststrate 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
USC returns to action Friday, April 14 with a 2 p.m. home match against Oregon.
