San Diego – On the final day of ITA Southwest Regionals taking place in San Diego, sophomore Emilija Tverijonaite bounced back in the third-place match with a straight-sets victory over San Diego’s Kailey Evans, 6-1, 6-4 to secure a birth in the NCAA Singles tournament set for Nov. 19-24 in Waco, Texas.
The win marks the first Sun Devil NCAA singles qualifier since Ilze Hattingh qualified for the tournament in 2021.
Due to an ITA regional finalist already qualified for the NCAA singles tournament, the winner of the 3rd place match decided who would be the second qualifier for the championship in November, qualifying Emilija into the field of 64.
The sophomore went 5-1 this past weekend in singles play, and is now 9-1 this Fall season, including having three, 3-set wins in her past two tournaments.
In September at the UTSA SoCal Intercollegiate Championships, Tverijonaite won the singles draw, dropping only one set for the entire tournament in four matches defeating BYU’s Grace Levelston 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (3).
Ranked No. 52 in the nation, the Lithuanian managed an upset victory over No. 15 Emma Charney of USC in the quarterfinal round, winning 6-1, 7-6 (4). She also 2-1 this past week in doubles play paired with teammate Aiya Nupbay.
