CARY, N.C. – NC State captured its first ACC Women’s Tennis Championship in program history on Sunday, defeating North Carolina, 4-1, at Cary Tennis Park.
After reaching the semifinals for the first time since 1998, the No. 3 seeded Wolfpack took the doubles point from the top-seeded Tar Heels with wins on Courts 2 and 3.
Sophie Abrams and Abigail Rencheli registered a 6-2 win over Reilly Tran and Abbey Forbes at the No. 3 slot while the No. 8 ranked pairing of Nell Miller and Amelia Rajecki clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 position with a 6-1 victory over 11th-ranked Carson Tanguilig and Fiona Crawley.
No. 29 Rajecki secured the first singles point on Court 2 with a straight-set 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 21 Tanguilig to give NC State a 2-0 lead over North Carolina. No. 12 Diana Shnaider, who was named the ACC Women’s Tennis Championship MVP, extended the Wolfpack’s lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over No. 1 Crawley.
No. 6 Reese Brantmeier put the Tar Heels on the board with her 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 15 Alana Smith, but NC State’s Sophie Abrams would clinch the Championship for the Wolfpack with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over No. 95 Elizabeth Scotty.
