TULSA, Okla., – For the first time this fall, most of Mississippi State’s men’s tennis team will be taking the courts together in the same tournament.
Five Bulldogs are bound for the ITA All-American Championships beginning on Saturday. No. 36 Dusan Milanovic, No. 68 Petar Jovanovic, Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes, Benito Sanchez Martinez and Radomir Tomic will compete in the nine-day event that will once again be hosted on Tulsa’s campus for the 18th consecutive year.
“This is the first tournament of the fall where most of the team is together so we will have a lot of fun on the road this week,” said head coach Matt Roberts. “Secondary, the fall is a period where we add things to their games either mentally, tactically or technically. So, our goal is to get better with each match and trust what we have been implementing in practice and now apply it in a match situation.”
Two of MSU’s freshmen will get things going in Saturday’s prequalifying singles draw. Ferrer Guimaraes is set to start the day against Princeton sophomore Ellis Short at 8 a.m. while Tomic takes the court later at 1:45 p.m. against sophomore Benedikt Emesz of Arkansas.
If Ferrer Guimaraes wins in the opening round, he will compete again Saturday at 4:30 p.m. A first-round victory for Tomic would have him on the court again at 6:30 p.m.
The qualifying draw will begin on Monday with the main draw following from Wednesday through Oct. 8. The tournament features 256 singles competitors and 64 doubles teams.
