LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A three-day weekend of action came to a successful close at the Louisville Classic tournament for Michigan State men’s tennis.
Freshmen Mitchell Sheldon and Danial Rakhmatullayev, along with senior Josh Portnoy ended their weekend with three final wins.
Match play started on Friday, with all three Spartans taking part in matches.
Sheldon started out with the first win for the team going 6-0, 6-3 in his first match this weekend. In his next match, he went up against Jose Garcia from Tennessee, falling, 4-6, 2-6. Saturday’s second match Sheldon took down Enrique Pena of Louisville, 7-5, 6-3. Starting out on Sunday, Sheldon put another win on the board for the Spartans against Evan Duggal from Louisville, 6-1, 6-0.
After starting out with two losses on the weekend, Portnoy came back in the second matches on Saturday against Matthew Nice of Bellarmine, 7-5, 6-3. Helping his team with another win, Portnoy won his final match on Sunday, taking down Russell Lokko from Louisville in a tough battle, winning, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
A tough loss ended Friday night’s action for Rakhmatuellayev, 4-6, 3-6. Looking to start Saturday out with a win, he went up against Russell Lokko from Louisville, winning his match in a quick, 6-4, 6-0. In his second match on day two, Rakhmatuellayev picked up another win for the Spartans against Evan Duggal from Louisville, 6-3, 6-2. To wrap up the weekend tournament, Rakhmatullayev took on Nice of Bellarmine, taking him down, 6-0, 6-3.
Rakhmatullayev and Sheldon will head to the Fighting Irish Mini Duals next weekend, Friday-Sunday, Nov. 1-3.
After these tournaments, Spartans will head back home to prepare for ITA Regionals, B1G Indoor Championships and ITA Conference Masters which take place on Nov. 7-10.
