MSU Adds Two More Ranked Wins


TULSA, Okla., – Mississippi State’s success continued at the ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs earned two more ranked victories during the first day of the main draw to bring their overall win total to 12 during the tournament hosted by Tulsa.

Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez kept their hot hand in doubles by defeating No. 47 Alex Kiefer and Jeffrey von Der Schulenburg of Virginia 4-6, 6-2, 1-0[6]. It was the fourth win and second ranked victory of the event for the MSU sophomores that only teamed together three times last season.

Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez also knocked off 59th-ranked Murphy Cassone and Martin Vergara Del Puerto of Arizona State 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 1-0[7] on Monday.

Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez are set to meet Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli of N.C. State in the second round on Thursday at 3 p.m.

No. 36 Dusan Milanovic started Wednesday morning off positively with his 6-3, 6-4 singles victory over 62nd-ranked Max Westphal of Columbia. Milanovic moves on to meet Cassone, who is ranked fourth nationally and the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament, in the second round on Thursday at 9 a.m.

The Bulldogs’ lone loss on Wednesday came as Jovanovic – ranked 68th in singles – fell 6-3, 6-4 to No. 38 Tadeas Paroulek of Baylor. He will have a consolation match against No. 79 Magnus Johnson of Florida on Thursday at 9 a.m.
