Monday Named SEC Player of the Week


After an impressive 7-0 start in singles action atop Tennessee’s lineup, Johannus Monday has been named SEC Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
 
The Hull, England, native kicked off the 2024 dual match season with three straight-set wins, defeating Furman’s Elijah Poritzky, 6-4, 6-3, Penn’s Manfredi Graziani, 6-4, 6-2, and Tennessee Tech’s Alex Alvarez, 6-1, 6-2.
 
Monday sparked a four-match win streak against ranked opponents with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4 victory over Michigan’s No. 9 Gavin Young to clinch the Vols’ 4-3 win over the No. 14 Wolverines. The senior went on to rout Wake Forest’s No. 7 Filippo Moroni, 6-3, 6-4, South Florida’s No. 27 Alvin Tudorica, 6-2, 6-0, and Oklahoma’s No. 91 Alex Martinez, 6-2, 6-0.
 
In doubles competition, Monday, alongside his partner Angel Diaz, recorded a dominant 6-2 win over Michigan’s 31st-ranked duo of Gavin Young and Nino Ehrenschneider.
 
UT is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 4, traveling to Fort Worth, Texas, to go head-to-head with No. 5 TCU in a top-five matchup.
