Miyoshi, Heck, Ozolins Move on at Day Four of Fighting Illini Open


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — An Illini singles player and doubles team advanced to the next round of action at the Fighting Illini Open, a men’s tennis 25K Tournament on the International Tennis Federation World Tour, on Thursday.

Kenta Miyoshi advanced to the quarterfinals of the competition with his victory, clinching his deepest-ever run in an International Tennis Federation World Tour tournament. Miyoshi faced off against Cash Hanzik, needing three sets to grind out the win. After taking the first set, 6-3, and falling in the second by the reverse scoreline, Miyoshi rattled off four straight games to secure the final frame, 6-2, and clinch the match.

Hunter Heck and Karlis Ozolins advanced over Sebastian Gorzny and Chih Chi Huang via walkover, sending the Illinois duo to the doubles semifinals.

Alex Petrov’s tournament run came to a close on Thursday afternoon. After winning on three straight days to earn a spot in the second round, Petrov fell in straight sets to fifth-seeded Cannon Kingsley, 6-1, 6-3.

Miyoshi moves on to face No. 3 Naoki Nakagawa in the quarterfinals in singles action, while Heck and Ozolins will play Jack Anthrop and Cannon Kingsley in the semifinals of the doubles tournament on Friday. Miyoshi’s match will be the first of the day at 10 a.m. CT on court one, while Heck and Ozolins will compete in the third match on court one on Friday afternoon.
