SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller of the University of Michigan women’s tennis team made a run to the semifinals of the doubles main draw of the ITA Fall National Championships, falling to the top-seeded duo, Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen of Pepperdine, on Saturday (Nov. 5) at the Barnes Tennis Center.
In the semifinals, Brown and Miller rebounded from a 6-1 first-set loss to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second. After Pepperdine answered with two straight games, U-M held on Miller’s next service game to keep the break at 4-2. U-M won the final two games to take the set and head to a 10-point breaker.
The Waves raced out to a 5-1 lead at the first changeover before Michigan started to cut into the lead. U-M closed to within one point at 8-7, but Pepperdine got a fortunate break on a ripped forehand that clipped the net and allowed it to stay in for a 9-7 lead. The Waves cashed in on their first match point to advance to the championship match.
It was the second straight run for the pair at a national tournament after Brown and Miller finished runner-up at the ITA All-American earlier this fall to punch their ticket to this tourney. The pair got wins over teams from BYU, Illinois and Temple in the earlier rounds.
Brown also participated in the singles main draw by virtue of her singles win at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. After falling to No. 3-ranked Daria Frayman in the first round of the main draw, she picked up a win over No. 96-ranke Elza Tomase of Tennessee in the backdraw. Brown withdrew from singles in the next round, ending her fall season.
Lily Jones and Julia Fliegner were also in action at the tourney, dropping both doubles matches after finishing runner-up at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships.
U-M wraps up its fall season tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 6) with four players in action at the ASU Thunderbird.
