SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Mississippi State women’s tennis hit the West Coast to compete in the ITA National Fall Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center.
After winning the ITA Southern Regional doubles title last month, Alexandra Mikhailuk and Athina Pitta received a main draw bid for the ITA National Fall Championships. State’s duo faced Southern California’s duo of Piper Grace and Parker Fry in the first round of the doubles Fall Nationals, but fell 6-1, 6-3.
“Today was a tough day and we have to learn from it,” head coach Chris Hooshyar said. “At this level, we can’t give points away and second guess ourselves. We have to commit to our decisions and try and execute them. Southern California played very well and at this level you will only get a few opportunities. You have to put yourself in the position to take them and we didn’t. The best thing about a bad beating is it forces you to learn. We will learn from this, hit the practice court and come back hungrier!”
State’s duo will now compete in the consolation round, with the time and opponent announced later on.
