Michigan Posts Perfect Weekend after Blanking Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men’s tennis team secured a perfect weekend of play with a 4-0 win over Purdue on Sunday (April 16), a day after a 4-0 win at Indiana. It marks the Wolverines’ 20th win of the season, the ninth time in program history the team has hit the 20-win plateau and the fifth time in the last eight seasons.
Patrick Maloney and Nino Ehrenschneider got things started with a 6-0 blanking of Michal Wozniak and Milledge Cossu at No. 2 doubles. Ondrej Styler and Jacob Bickersteth clinched the point with a 6-3 victory over Julen Morgan and Mutjaba Ali-Khan at No. 3 doubles including three break points.
Michigan inserted Bjorn Swenson and Patorn Hanchaikul into the singles lineup, giving Maloney and Gavin Young a rest.
Hanchaikul took advantage of his opportunity, his first match since March 30, with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6. He won five straight points for his first B1G dual singles win of the season.
Ehrenschneider improved to 4-1 in B1G play with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. It marks his first match and first win at the position this season as he strung together seven straight points.
Fenty clinched the match for Michigan with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. It’s the ninth straight win for the No. 11-ranked Wolverine, as he improves to 16-3 in dual play and 33-4 overall.
Styler made it a perfect sweep for Michigan in the first sets when he took a 7-2 tiebreaker in his opening set with Daniel Labrador, 7-6. Leading 1-0 in the second, the match was halted. Other matches still in play were Bickersteth leading Cossu 6-2, 3-4 and Swenson over Dudek 6-1, 3-2.
Michigan will conclude the regular season in Ann Arbor next weekend, with Big Ten Championship still up for grabs. Michigan and Northwestern, opponents on Friday (April 21) both have just one loss, while Ohio State is 7-0.
