Men’s Tennis Shuts Out Hawai’i to Open Season

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men’s tennis team started its 2023 dual-match season in the win column, prevailing 7-0 versus Hawai’i Friday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Honolulu native Azuma Visaya posted the clinching victory in his debut. Jeffrey Fradkin, Giacomo Revelli, Aadarsh Tripathi and Patrick Zahraj each won twice across singles and doubles competitions.

The doubles point was decided by a tiebreaker, as Revelli and Zahraj held off Karl Collins and Andre Ilagan for a 7-6(5) result. Fradkin and Tripathi got the Bruins (1-0) off on the right foot, blanking Andy Hernandez and Lucas Labrunie on Court 3. The Rainbow Warriors (0-3) momentarily pulled even when Axel Labrunie and Kilian Maitre got past Alexander Hoogmartens and Timothy Li by a 6-4 margin.

Zahraj raced out of the singles gates to a 6-0 first-set win against Collins on Court 4. The Bruin would drop just two total games en route to doubling the team lead.

The 83rd-ranked Hoogmartens also finished his task in straight sets on Court 1, beating No. 41 Ilagan by a 6-4, 6-1 score. Hoogmartens has now beaten four top-50 opponents this season, dating back to fall tournament play.

Visaya’s followed the examples of Zahraj and Hoogmartens, not letting Hernandez within striking range on Court 5. The freshman put up a pair of 6-3 sets for the fourth point.
