LOS ANGELES – Making his dual-match debut, Gianluca Ballota clinched the UCLA men’s tennis team’s 6-1 win against Portland Saturday at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Patrick Zahraj and Giacomo Revelli of the Bruins (4-1) were also triumphant on the singles courts before the deciding victory. Azuma Visaya and Alexander Hoogmartens tacked on points. It was a two-win day for Hoogmartens, who helped seal the doubles point. Maxim Groysman prevailed late for the Pilots (2-2).
Hoogmartens and Timothy Li provided a leg up for the hosts, capturing their third victory in as many decisions on Court 2. The pair took six of its seven games with Cade Fernando and Issa Yoshida. Jeffrey Fradkin and Aadarsh Tripathi of UCLA followed suit on Court 3, controlling their contest with Fabian Gusic and Nicolas Ocana en route to a 6-2 win.
The Bruins collected each of the first sets in singles play, with four surrendering two games or fewer. Zahraj ultimately dropped just two total games in his 2023 debut on Court 2, dispatching of Ocana by a 6-1, 6-1 score. Zahraj is 4-0 with four straight-set results.
No. 89 Revelli finished right on the heels of Zahraj, making the overall tally 3-0 with his 6-0, 6-3 win on Court 3. Freshmen Ballotta and Visaya each neared a clinching victory on the back courts, but it was Ballotta who sealed it. Running to his left, the southpaw sent a shot up the line past Gusic to complete the 6-2, 6-4 decision.
This shot up the line gives Ballotta a debut clincher, 6-2, 6-4 on 6 ??
