TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Michigan State men’s tennis is back in action this weekend, traveling to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to face Alabama on Saturday, Jan. 28

MSU goes into the weekend sitting at 2-2 in the young spring season, picking up the first two victories in the Harry Jadun era with a doubleheader sweep last Saturday in East Lansing. The Spartans showed out in their home opener, winning a clinch against Brown, 4-1 in the first match followed up by a 5-2 win over Bellarmine in the nightcap. With freshman Ozan Baris, who  sits at No. 26 in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, out of the lineup, the Spartans earned decisive victories in doubles and singles to take both matches.

Fifth-year senior Anthony Pero won all three of his matches last weekend, picking up two doubles wins with junior Reed Crocker. Pero won his lone singles match, defeating Brown’s Alex Finkelstein in straight sets at No. 1 singles. Junior Luke Baylis also went 3-0 last weekend, picking up two singles victories over Brown’s Oliver Worth at No. 3 singles and Bellarmine’s Jack Batchelor at the No. 2 slot. Baylis and fellow junior Graydon Lair defeated Bellarmine’s Jack Batchelor and Eli Wood to take the doubles point.

This weekend marks the second time this season the Spartans will travel to the Gulf Coast, having faced off against then-No. 24 Auburn on Jan. 15 in what was a 4-3 victory for the Tigers.

Alabama heads into the weekend at a perfect 4-0 mark to start the season, picking up a pair of doubleheader wins the past two weekends at home. The Crimson Tide opened the spring season on Jan. 14, dispatching Samford and Mercer by a combined 13-1 score. Alabama followed that performance with another doubleheader weekend victory, this time over UAB, 5-2, and a sweep over Chattanooga (7-0).

The Crimson Tide currently have two players ranked in the latest ITA Singles Rankings. Sophomore Enzo Aguiard sits at No. 35 after the fall having won the singles crown at the ITA Southern Regional Championships in October and advancing to the round of 16 in the ITA Fall National Championships.
