Men’s Tennis Falls Short to No. 1 TCU in 2nd Round of NCAA Championships

FORT WORTH – The Utah men’s tennis season came to a close on Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Championships when they were defeated by No. 1 TCU 4-0. The Utes closed the season with 21 wins. 
 
The Utes and TCU were in a battle in doubles. The Utes dropped No. 1 doubles, 6-1, but were battling on court 2. Jayson Blando and Mathias Gavelin faced No. 10 ranked Sanders Jong and Lui Maxted. Utah had a 5-4 lead, but the match went unfinished. Utah dropped No. 3 doubles, 6-2. 
 
Utah would need to win four singles matches to claim the match, but they would come up short. TCU went ahead 2-0 when they won No. 6 singles. The lead grew to 3-0 when No. 95 Jake Fearnley defeated Mathias Gavelin, 6-4, 6-3. TCU clinched the match when No. 72 Sander Jong defeated Calua 6-3, 7-5 in No. 3 singles. 
 
Utah dropped the first sets in No. 1 and 2 singles, but Francisco Bastias led in the second set 4-3 against 12th ranked Luc Fomba, 4-3. The match would go unfinished. Geronimo Espin Buslieman dropped a close first set and led 3-2 to 16th ranked Juan Carlos Aguilar in the second set. That match also went unfinished. 
 
Bruno Krenn won his first set in No. 5 singles. Facing Pedro Vives, the two would go into a first set tiebreaker, with Krenn winning the tiebreaker 7-5. The second set was tied 2-2 and would go unfinished.
