LINCOLN, Neb. – Illinois men’s tennis defeated Nebraska, 4-2, Friday evening at the Dillon Tennis Center.
Illinois goes to 11-8 on the year and 2-3 in conference competition while Nebraska falls to 12-8 on the year and 1-3 in Big Ten play.
“The guys responded well today,” head coach Brad Dancer said. “This group that is here is demonstrating tremendous leadership. It’s been a fun trip and we know we have another challenge Sunday.”
Doubles started with Shunya Maruyama and Leo Linquet beating Alex Petrov and William Mroz, 6-2. The Cornhuskers clinched the doubles point with Nic Wiedenhorn and Anton Shepp taking a 6-4 win over Hunter Heck and Lucas Horve.
No. 34-ranked Heck made quick work of Shepp, defeating the Cornhusker 6-1, 6-1 in straight sets. Mathis Debru went on to defeat Roni Hietaranta 7-5, 6-2 with Mroz taking down Lars Johann 7-6 (5), 6-3.
After a Horve loss, Petrov clinched the win with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory over No. 109-ranked Mueller
