Men’s Tennis Concludes Play at ITA Regionals – Penn State

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The Penn State men’s tennis team finished competition at the ITA Regional tournament, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, last weekend, Oct. 17-21.  

Freshman David Lindsay, seniors Loren Byers and grad students Sam Bossem and Charl Morgan represented the Nittany Lions.  

Leading the squad, Byers captured three singles wins, taking him to the Quarterfinal round of the tournament. Byers defeated Aleksandar Mitric of Princeton in a 6-4, 7-6(4) matchup in the first round on Thursday to begin his winning streak. In the Round of 32, Byers won a strong match against Fordham’s Dhillon Verde-Oakley, 6-1, 6-2. In the Round of 16, Byers defeated Amaar Tahirovic from Bucknell, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, making him one of the last eight players standing.  

Morgan followed with two singles wins. His victories against Martim Marujo of Temple, in a 6-4, 7-6(3) match, and Penn’s Baylor Sai, in a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4) matchup, sent Morgan to the Round of 16.  

Bossem and Morgan combined for a doubles win, 8-6, over Wagner’s Eddie Schmidt/Pablo Rodriguez.

The Blue and White look to travel to Ithaca, N.Y. for the Cornell Invitational next weekend. The tournament is set to run from Friday, Nov. 1 to Sunday, Nov. 3.
