BATON ROUGE, La. – The Tennessee men’s tennis team is set to have six members compete this week at the LSU Invitational, taking place at the LSU Tennis Complex.
The players representing the Big Orange this weekend are Shunsuke Mitsui, James Newton Alejandro Moreno, Alan Jesudason, Ian Cruz and Jose Garcia.
The draw will feature competitors from Tennessee, Columbia, LSU, San Diego, TCU and Tulane participating in singles and doubles action. Play will start at 11 a.m. ET on Friday and Saturday with the second round of matches each day ensuing at 3 p.m. ET. The first round of matches on Sunday will begin at 10 a.m. ET and the second round of matches at 2 p.m. ET.
A quartet of Vols participating this weekend also took part in the Louisville Classic last weekend, where the Big Orange went a combined 7-6 in singles play.
THE LINEUP
Shunsuke Mitsui eclipsed 100 singles wins for his career at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships earlier this month after he went a perfect 5-0 in singles play to bring his total victory count to 103. The senior boasts an 11-2 singles mark and 5-1 doubles record on the year and looks to continue his success this weekend. Mitsui currently sits as the 10th overall singles player in the country in the ITA National Preseason Rankings
Alejandro Moreno has made his mark so far as a Vol, recently tallying a runner-up result in doubles and a fourth-place singles finish at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships. The junior currently has a 7-1 record in singles play and a 6-1 in doubles for the year. The Knoxville native is currently the 111th overall singles player in the country.
James Newton recently competed in his first tournament of the fall slate, going 2-1 in singles play. The sophomore looks to build on his success in singles last year after securing double-digit wins during his first season at UT.
Alan Jesudason is set to make his third tournament appearance of his UT career to date. So far this season, the senior holds a 4-1 singles record and a 5-1 doubles mark.
Jose Garcia is coming off a three-win performance at the Louisville Classic this past weekend and is looking to build on the momentum he gained. The Knoxville native has picked up six victories in singles so far this season, boasting a 6-1 record overall.
Ian Cruz rounds out the six Vols who will be headed down south for the weekend. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, native has notched three singles wins and two doubles…
